About Hussain Memorial !


In response to public demand for a qualitative English medium School, this School was founded at Avadi in the year 1970 by late Major M.K. Hussain. Subsequently, on public request, a branch of the same was started at Ambattur in 1973. The School was then known as Model School and even to this day some call it by that name. During these years the School has made long strides and achieved a high standard both in the field of academics and extra curricular activities.

In March 1981, the School was renamed after the founder as Hussain Memorial Kinder Cottage Model School.

In June 1987, the School was recognized by the Govt. of Tamilnadu and in June 1997 the School was upgraded to a Higher Secondary School and was renamed as Hussain Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School.


The aim of the School is to impart quality education and mould the overall personality of the child by developing his / her creative skills / talents, character and interests by providing personal attention.

The School is recognized by the Government of Tamilnadu and is governed by the Rules and Regulations set by the Directorate of School Education.

The School follows the Samacheer Kalvi Syllabus and the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation system laid down by the Government.

The Curriculum of the School is so structured that the students progressively imbibe the knowledge and skills which he/she can effectively apply in life. Creative and innovative teaching techniques, in keeping with the times, are applied to enhance the comprehension level of students and make learning that much more interesting and meaningful. Adequate emphasis is given to the practical application of the subjects taught through various techniques / methods. In order to ensure personal attention, the strength of each class is confined to manageable limits.

The School has dovetailed the XSEED syllabus, a teaching - learning system in the curriculum.

The School lays a lot of emphasis on English speaking and communication skills, so that the students are in a better position to comprehend the subjects taught and at the same time achieve the desired fluency in speaking and writing in English.

The School has a system of continuous monitoring of the performance of a student from one class to another throughout his / her stay in the School. The strengths and weaknesses are recorded, actioned and monitored.The School discourages private tuitions.

Besides various prizes and awards for excellence in academics, extra curricular activities and games, the School also honours achievers in Class X and XII.

  • In order to kindle the innovative and creative thoughts of the students, a magazine known as “REFLECTIONS” is published periodically, which is entirely managed and edited by the students.
  • Counselling by professionals for students of higher classes to check their aptitude.
  • Guest lectures by eminent speakers on subjects of interest to students.
  • Field Trips / Tours to various organisations are periodically conducted.
  • Indoor Recreation Room with Table Tennis, Chess, Carrom, Scrabble and other Games is also provided.
  • A Weather Station which has instruments like Wind Wane, Anemometer, Thermometers, Stevenson's Screen, Barometer and a Rain Gauge. The daily Weather Report is recorded and displayed on the Notice Board by Students.
  • A Nursery with all types of plants like Creepers, Climbers, Shrubs, Herbs, Flowering, Ornamental and Bonsai. This gives the students practical exposure to plants.
  • As part of the Computer Syllabus, typing classes have been introduced.
  • The School has a Sports Complex which has a Cricket / Football ground, Cricket practice pitches, Basket ball, Volley ball, Throw ball, Tennikoit courts and a Childrens Park. A covered pavilion to accommodate 600 students with facilities like changing rooms and toilets for both boys and girls are also provided at the Sports Complex.
  • A Tuck Shop for students, providing stationary and light refreshments / confectionary is also available.
  • The School provides Bus Facilities.


The School firmly believes in the dictum that ‘A Healthy Body is a Healthy Mind’. To achieve this objective the ECA / CCA and games are properly structured and conducted throughout the Academic year with all the seriousness it deserves. Some of the salient activities are:-

  • The School is divided into four houses and Inter House Competitions for 23 events as listed at Appendix to this hand Book, for all age groups are conducted.
  • Class Academic Competitions on Handwriting, Essay Writing, Drawing, Elocution and Recitation are conducted in English, Tamil, Hindi and French, as applicable.
  • The students of the School actively participate in the various Inter School Competitions organized by various agencies and many have excelled in most of them.
  • The students are also selected and formed into teams/clubs to participate in 13 Extra Curricular Activities as listed at Appendix which assist the students in harnessing their skill and honing on to their talents.
  • To ensure that the desired emphasis is given to hobbies every Saturday is observed as an Hobby Coaching Classes (HCC) Day where the students can choose and participate in any one of the 27 Hobby Coaching Classes which are listed at Appendix to this hand book. Well qualified instructors / trainers specially trained in these disciplines conduct the classes for the students under the supervision of our school teachers.
  • Besides this, the students are encouraged to take part in sports and games. The facilities presently available are listed at Appendix to this hand Book.
  • In case of primary and middle School both skipping and Hula Hoop is compulsory.
  • Scouts and Guides is compulsory for students from classes VI to VIII with effect from academic year 2016-17. Qualified teachers conduct the classes during non-working hours and students are also taken on Scouts & Guides Camps. The Camp is marked by a host of activities encompassing tent pitching, living off the land, air gun firing, cooking, field signals, knots, first aid and finally culminating in a camp fire. The Camp gives the students an actual insight into camp life and the vagaries and opportunities that such a situation affords.
  • The School has a full fledged Band where children are trained by professionals. A School Orchestra has been recently started to further enhance the avenues available for students to persue music.
  • The School also conducts Excursions, Education Tours, Field Trips and ECO Tours for the students.
  • Students of higher classes are trained by the Traffic Police on road safety and traffic rules and they periodically perform duties of Road Safety Patrols.
  • Regular demonstrations are held on Road Safety, Disaster Management, Waste Management, Environmental Values, Road Safety, Health and Hygiene and First Aid, Food Adulterations and various other disciplines concerning students.
  • Exhibitions on Science, Maths, Computer Science, History, Geography and Languages are conducted during the year.


The School encourages the use of School Bus as it provides the children a safe means of commuting to School. The means of commuting provided by the School strictly adheres to the Traffic Police norms for School Buses. We would request the parents to avail of this facility for the safety and convenience of their Child.
